South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has removed a prominent economist from an advisory panel due to questions surrounding her PhD. Thabi Leoka claimed to have obtained her degree from the London School of Economics (LSE), but investigations carried out by Business Day and Daily Maverick found no evidence to support her claim. Last week, Leoka denied misrepresenting her qualifications. However, on Monday, she resigned from her positions on the boards of two well-known companies. Mining company Anglo American Platinum Limited and mobile phone company MTN SA both issued statements, saying that Leoka stepped down to address her health concerns and the questions surrounding her academic credentials. On the same day, Leoka was informed by President Ramaphosa's spokesman that she was being immediately terminated from the Presidential Economic Advisory Council. The council does not require formal vetting for its members and is responsible for advising on economic policies that promote inclusive growth. When contacted by Business Day, the LSE stated that it could not find any record of Leoka being awarded a PhD. Leoka explained to the Daily Maverick that she had not had the opportunity to obtain her degree certificate as she had been occupied and mentioned her health issues, including glaucoma. She also stated that her qualifications were registered under a different name, which is why the LSE was unable to locate evidence of her PhD. Leoka has gained recognition as an economist and commentator in South Africa, serving on various boards and advising the government.
