Spanish authorities are currently investigating the murder of three elderly siblings, which is believed to be connected to an online romance scam. The suspect, identified as Dilawar Hussain F.C., a 42-year-old man of Pakistani origin, turned himself in and admitted to the killings. The victims, Amelia, Ángeles, and José Gutiérrez Ayuso, were found partially burned at their home in Morata de Tajuña, a town southeast of Madrid. It seems that the motive behind the crime was a debt that the siblings owed to the suspect, who was connected to the sisters' involvement in an online scam. According to reports, Ángeles and Amelia had been engaged in online relationships with individuals claiming to be US military personnel, to whom they had sent a significant amount of money, totaling around €400,000. José, who had a mental disability, was not involved in the financial transactions. As a result of this scam, the sisters had depleted their finances and resorted to asking friends, neighbors, the mayor, and the priest for money. Mr. Hussain had lived with the siblings for several months and claimed that they owed him a large sum of money, which he had provided as a high-interest loan. However, they failed to repay him. This is not the first violent incident involving Mr. Hussain, as he had previously attacked Amelia with a hammer in 2023, receiving a jail sentence and a restraining order. He was released after seven months. Concerned neighbors contacted the police after not seeing or hearing from the siblings for several weeks. Local acquaintances revealed that the victims' insistence on sending money to their supposed partners had prompted them to sell a property they owned in Madrid. Despite warnings from those around them that it was a scam, the sisters remained adamant about their relationships. Friends described the victims as ordinary individuals who fell in love, with no indication of them being gullible or naive. The investigation is ongoing.
