Microsoft has announced a significant update to its keyboards by introducing an AI key, marking the biggest change to its keyboards in thirty years. This AI key will allow users to access Copilot, Microsoft's AI tool, on new Windows 11 PCs. It's worth noting that Microsoft is a major investor in OpenAI, which powers Copilot's AI capabilities. The company has been integrating AI into various products such as Microsoft 365 and Bing search with plans to continue doing so in 2023. On the other hand, rival Apple has already included a Siri button on its touch bar in Macbooks for a few years. Copilot is designed to assist users with tasks like searching, writing emails, and creating images. In a blog post, Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's executive vice president, described the introduction of the AI key as a "transformative" moment similar to when the Windows key was added thirty years ago. He emphasized that it would simplify and enhance the user experience. These new keyboards are expected to be available on new products starting in February. Microsoft will be showcasing some of these products with the Copilot key at the upcoming CES tech event in Las Vegas. Microsoft has been incorporating Copilot into its Office 365 products, including Word, PowerPoint, and Teams. This integration allows Copilot to summarize meetings, write emails, and create presentations. Furthermore, Copilot has also been integrated into Microsoft's search engine, Bing. While Google, the world's largest search engine, has its own AI system called Bard, it was Microsoft's partner, OpenAI, that introduced ChatGPT, a powerful AI tool, in 2022. This prompted other companies to rush and release their own versions. It's worth mentioning that the UK's competition watchdog is currently investigating Microsoft's relationship with OpenAI in light of recent boardroom chaos that resulted in a close connection between the two firms.
