The Swedish armed forces have provided aid to around 1,000 cars that were stranded in heavy snow for almost 24 hours. This occurred on the main E22 road in the Skane area of southern Sweden. Rescue teams worked to evacuate those trapped, instructing them to return to their vehicles later. The situation arose due to severe winter conditions affecting several Nordic countries. Denmark experienced snowstorms which left drivers stranded on a motorway near Aarhus since Wednesday. Additionally, the Kvikkjokk-Arrenjarka weather station in northern Sweden recorded its coldest night in 25 years on Tuesday with temperatures reaching -43.6C. The travel disruption on the E22 road began on Wednesday morning when snow made it impassable in both directions. Snow ploughs arrived in the evening to assist in clearing the road, and police and rescuers worked throughout the night to free hundreds of people trapped in their cars. Soldiers were also deployed to deliver food and water to those stranded. While many vehicles had been cleared by Thursday morning, lorries remained stuck. Authorities warned that the road would not be fully cleared until at least 08:00 on Friday. As a result, buses and trains were cancelled in the Skane region, and people were advised against non-essential travel.
