The main challenge lies in the high cost and maintenance difficulties associated with operating in the sea. However, supporters of tidal power believe that as the industry grows, costs will decrease similarly to those seen in wind and solar power. The predictability of tides makes tidal power an attractive alternative to gas-powered plants, which are used to balance intermittent renewable energy sources. The UK government is providing subsidies for tidal energy projects and is committed to purchasing the electricity they produce. While tidal energy does create a minute additional drag on the Earth's rotation, this effect on the length of the day is negligible. Tidal energy is expected to play a significant role in the UK's energy system in the future, benefiting the overall energy landscape.
