In response to protests against the re-election of President Azali Assoumani, authorities in Comoros have taken the drastic step of cutting off internet access. The demonstrations in the capital, Moroni, have turned violent, with reports of one person killed and several others injured. Protesters have barricaded roads and there have been numerous arrests. To control the unrest, a curfew has been imposed. The opposition parties have disputed the election results, leading to the outbreak of violent protests. Buildings, including a minister's residence, have been targeted, and looting and arson have occurred. The disruption to internet services has been significant, with websites rendered inaccessible and WhatsApp calls blocked. This is an attempt by the authorities to prevent protestors from communicating and sharing images on social media. The protests have resulted in casualties, with six people admitted to the hospital, one of whom is in critical condition. The opposition claims that the demonstrations are an organic response to authoritarian rule, even though they did not organize them. The government, however, vows to stand firm against violence and asserts that they know who is responsible. President Assoumani's victory in the election is expected to be confirmed by the Supreme Court in the coming days.
