According to reports, a Polish doctor who was abducted in Chad has been rescued in a daring nighttime operation. Kidnappers in Chad fired shots at a helicopter that was attempting to rescue Aleksandra Kuligowska. Kuligowska was abducted on Friday near the town of Dono Manga by armed men who posed as a patient. She was held hostage for five days in a dense forest around 10km away from Dono Manga. The doctor was rescued at 03:00 local time in a joint operation by French and Chadian forces. The kidnappers were killed in the rescue operation. Kuligowska was found weakened and traumatized but in good health. She was flown to the capital, N'Djamena, and is expected to return to Poland soon. Another victim, a Mexican colleague named Carlos, was also taken but was later released. No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping. Chad has a history of armed banditry and frequent kidnappings for ransom in the region. French forces stationed in the Sahel confirmed that Chadian forces carried out the rescue but did not disclose the involvement of French soldiers. France has had a military presence in West African countries for many years and has participated in anti-jihadist operations in the Sahel. However, several countries in the region have recently expelled French soldiers due to political instability. Chad is currently home to around 1,000 French troops, despite experiencing its own military takeover.
