Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first democratically elected President, has passed away at 43 years old due to cancer. She died on Monday evening in the presence of her loved ones, according to a spokesperson. In recent years, Ms. Mandela gained recognition for sharing her cancer treatment journey and openly discussing her struggle with drug addiction. The Nelson Mandela Foundation praised her work as inspirational, noting that she raised awareness about cancer prevention and fought against the stigma surrounding the disease. Ms. Mandela also bravely shared her battles with depression and revealed that she had experienced sexual abuse during her childhood. Additionally, she campaigned for improved road safety after losing her 13-year-old daughter in a car accident in 2010 and endured the premature loss of a son. She leaves behind four children. In her autobiography, "When Hope Whispers," she chronicled her experiences. Diagnosed with breast cancer at 32, she achieved remission but sadly faced a return of the illness in her liver, lungs, and other organs. Although she received outpatient treatment, she was admitted to the hospital just over a week ago. In one of her Instagram posts last month, she expressed her fear of not surviving and her reluctance to leave her children behind. Despite her struggles, in an April interview, she shared her journey of accepting her fate. Ms. Mandela was only 10 years old when her grandfather was released from his 27-year-long imprisonment in 1990. Witnessing his freedom after only knowing him as a prisoner brought her immense joy. Nelson Mandela passed away in 2013 at the age of 95.
