Viktor Orban, the current leader of Hungary, has been in power longer than any other leader in the European Union. Since 2010, he has transformed Hungary into what the European Parliament has called a "hybrid regime of electoral autocracy." Orban has clashed with the EU on issues such as migration and the war in Ukraine, and has blocked EU funds from being given to Ukraine. He has been able to maintain and strengthen his grip on power by presenting himself as the only solution to the problems faced by the country. Orban's personal charisma and ability to think quickly have also contributed to his success. He first made a name for himself in the late 1980s by setting up a political movement called Fidesz. Orban has faced criticism for his alliance with Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite his early opposition to Soviet rule. His political ideology has shifted over the years, from liberalism to nationalism. Orban has been accused of using Hungarian-born billionaire George Soros as a scapegoat, leading to accusations of anti-Semitism. He has made changes to Hungary's media landscape, gaining control of the media and promoting his own narrative. Orban has also taken a hardline stance on migration, building fences and introducing laws to criminalize those who aid migrants. Hungary has faced criticism from the EU for its handling of the rule of law, corruption, and LGBT rights. Orban has aligned himself with Russia on the issue of Ukraine and has been the lone Nato member to oppose Swedish membership. Despite facing criticism and being seen as a lone figure in the EU, Orban believes change is coming and hopes to shape it to his advantage.
