Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in northern Gaza are leaving their homes as Israel prepares for a ground offensive against Hamas. However, despite the dangers, many are either unwilling or unable to evacuate. In an interview with BBC Arabic, 42-year-old Mohamed Ibrahim, surrounded by his relatives, says he will never leave his homeland. He explains that even if their homes are destroyed, he will remain in Gaza. Since Hamas gunmen infiltrated Israel and killed over 1,400 people, Israel has been retaliating with air strikes day and night. Thousands of Israeli troops are gathered on Gaza's borders, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to destroy Hamas. Ibrahim and his family have been moving around Gaza City to avoid air strikes, but they are now residing in a suburb as they have no other place to go. Despite the Israeli military urging civilians to evacuate to the south, Ibrahim and other residents are choosing to stay in the north because they see no alternative. Meanwhile, basic necessities like fuel, water, food, and medical supplies have been blocked by Israel, and Hamas is demanding the release of hostages taken into Gaza during their attacks. With no food or water for eight days, the situation is dire. Although almost half of Gaza's population consists of children, they are still playing in the streets during short moments of calm. The Palestinian Authority reports that over 700 children have already been killed in the conflict. If Israel launches a ground assault on northern Gaza, it could result in months of fighting and the destruction of the entire area, leaving tens of thousands of civilians caught in the crossfire.
