A devastating fire broke out in an apartment block in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, resulting in the death of at least 56 people and leaving dozens injured. The fire occurred during the night but has now been successfully extinguished. The owner of the building has been arrested following the incident. Authorities in Hanoi have expressed concerns about the lack of adherence to fire safety regulations in many newly-constructed apartments. The city's population has rapidly increased over the past two decades, reaching 5.25 million residents. As a result, the authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire. Witnesses have reported that the fire originated on the parking floor of the building, which was packed with motorcycles. Residents described hearing a loud bang around 11:00 PM local time on Tuesday, followed by the sight of black smoke spreading throughout the building. Some individuals had to resort to extreme measures, such as breaking through metal railings blocking their windows and using a ladder to reach a neighboring building for their escape. Eyewitnesses recalled hearing cries for help and expressed their inability to assist those trapped due to the lack of escape routes in the apartment block. In a harrowing incident, a young boy was reportedly thrown from a high floor to save him from the flames, though it is unknown if he survived. Despite the efforts of fifteen fire engines dispatched to the scene, they faced difficulty reaching the burning building due to the narrow alley where it was located. Outside a morgue in the western part of the city, hundreds of individuals gathered anxiously, waiting to identify their loved ones who may have perished in the blaze. The owner of the building, Nghiem Quang Minh, has been detained by the police on charges of violating fire-prevention regulations. This tragic incident once again highlights the challenges faced in ensuring proper fire safety management in rapidly growing and poorly regulated cities. Similar tragedies have occurred in other Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, where inadequate regulations and a lack of enforcement have led to several devastating fires.
