A US official responsible for diplomatic security has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the January 6th attacks on the US Capitol. Kevin Alstrup, who was working for the State Department at the time, is now facing four misdemeanor charges, including entering and remaining in a restricted building, disorderly conduct, and disruptive behavior. The arrest was made by the FBI, who used evidence from a search warrant for devices discovered inside the Capitol during the riot. The State Department has acknowledged Mr. Alstrup's arrest and stated that he is no longer employed by the agency. According to an FBI affidavit, Mr. Alstrup was employed as a Diplomatic Security Officer during the attacks and would have had knowledge and experience in providing security for high-ranking officials or sensitive locations. The FBI also found social media posts and photos on Mr. Alstrup's device, which showed his presence at the Capitol on January 6th. He was inside the building for 28 minutes, taking photos of other rioters and disregarding the alarms and instructions from Capitol Police to leave. The arrest of Mr. Alstrup brings the total number of defendants charged in connection with the Capitol riot to 1,265, with over 900 already pleading guilty or being convicted.
