A man from India named Nikhil Gupta has been charged by the US government for allegedly plotting to assassinate an American citizen in New York who advocates for a separate Sikh state. The indictment states that Gupta was instructed by an Indian government employee. The charges against Gupta include murder-for-hire, with prosecutors claiming that the plot was coordinated from India. The court documents do not reveal the identity of the alleged target. While the Indian government has not yet responded, it previously mentioned that it would look into the security concerns raised by the US regarding this assassination plot. US Attorney Damian Williams emphasized that Gupta conspired in India to assassinate a US citizen in New York who publicly supports the idea of a separate sovereign state for Sikhs. Williams added that the US will not tolerate attempts to assassinate American citizens on American soil. Sikhs, who represent a religious minority accounting for approximately 2% of India's population, have been calling for a separate homeland for a long time. The Indian government has typically responded strongly to demands by Sikh separatists in Western countries for an independent state called Khalistan. This is an ongoing story with further updates to come.
