Republicans have chosen Tom Emmer as their third nominee for House of Representatives Speaker, following the removal of their previous leader three weeks ago. The nomination of the Minnesota congressman will now be put to a vote in the full chamber, but it remains uncertain if he will be successful. Tom Emmer secured the nomination through a series of internal party ballots. Due to the removal of Kevin McCarthy on 3 October, the US legislature has faced challenges in passing bills. At present, Emmer, who currently holds the position of House Majority Whip, is the third-most influential Republican in the House. However, he may struggle to gain support from right-wing Republicans and allies of former President Donald Trump, owing to his vote to confirm President Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election. Prior to his political career, Emmer had a background in college ice hockey, both as a player and coach. He has also served as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which aids in the election of party candidates throughout the United States.
