TikTok has responded swiftly to combat misinformation on its platform following an attack by Hamas on Israel, according to the company. The European Union (EU) had urged TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew to take immediate action and explain within 24 hours how the platform was complying with European law. Misinformation about the conflict, including doctored images and mislabeled videos, has been spreading on social media platforms. TikTok stated that it has removed violative content and accounts, and allocated additional resources and personnel to ensure community safety. The EU has also issued warnings to other social media companies, including X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and Meta (owner of Facebook and Instagram), regarding misinformation. TikTok, which is owned by China's ByteDance, outlined the steps it has taken to combat misinformation and hateful content on its website. These include establishing a command center, enhancing automated detection systems, adding more moderators fluent in Arabic and Hebrew, and enforcing a zero-tolerance policy on violent and hateful organizations and individuals. The EU introduced new regulations, known as the Digital Services Act (DSA), which require large online platforms to proactively remove illegal content and demonstrate compliance upon request. The EU has the authority to conduct interviews, inspections, and formal investigations if platforms fail to comply. Possible consequences include fines and, as a last resort, temporary bans in the EU.
