At least 10 Cuban migrants have tragically died in a cargo truck accident in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. The incident occurred near the Guatemalan border, and 17 others sustained injuries, including a child. According to local officials, all the victims were female. This is the second fatal crash involving migrants in less than a week. The truck driver, who fled the scene, was operating a vehicle not meant for transporting such a large number of people, as stated by the National Migration Institute (INM). Initial reports suggest that the driver was speeding and lost control of the truck, causing it to overturn. The accident happened on a section of the motorway along the Pacific coast commonly used by migrants attempting to reach the United States. Images shared by authorities depicted the truck lying on its side in a ditch, with the migrants' belongings scattered around. Mexico frequently experiences road accidents involving migrants, as many individuals traverse the country in unauthorized and poorly maintained vehicles. Just a few days prior, another truck transporting migrants also overturned in a different part of Chiapas, resulting in the deaths of two migrants. Thousands of migrants from various nations have been making their way through Mexico using buses, trailers, and freight trains in their quest to reach the United States.
