Russia's state-owned rail giant, RZhD, has issued an apology after a cat died when a conductor threw it off a train in freezing temperatures. The incident took place in Kirov when the ginger-and-white cat, mistaken for a stray, escaped from its travel crate and was spotted by passengers walking along a carriage. Despite a search operation led by volunteers, the cat was found dead on Saturday. It is believed that the severe cold weather, with temperatures as low as -30C, contributed to the cat's death. Following the incident, two petitions have been launched—one calling for a criminal investigation against the unidentified female conductor, and another seeking her dismissal. RZhD has already taken steps to prevent animal mistreatment by prohibiting conductors from removing animals from trains. Instead, animals will be handed over to railway station employees and animal protection groups will be notified.
