Renowned Folk Singer Roger Whittaker Passes Away at Age 87 in Durham Town

Roger Whittaker, a renowned folk singer known for his hit songs Durham Town and The Last Farewell, has passed away at the age of 87. With nearly 50 million records sold worldwide, Whittaker's music captivated audiences across languages and cultures. Singing in languages such as German and French allowed him to gain popularity, particularly in Germany. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1936, Whittaker later pursued a medical degree but left after 18 months to pursue teaching. While at the University of Bangor, he discovered his passion for music and soon began recording his own songs. His career took off with the release of his first single, The Charge of the Light Brigade, followed by Steel Men, which gained airplay while he was still a student. In 2012, Whittaker retired with his wife Natalie in France.
