The defense ministry of Azerbaijan has announced that it has initiated "anti-terrorist" operations in Nagorno-Karabakh, a region currently controlled by Armenia. The presence of tension has been felt for several months in this ethnic Armenian enclave, which is internationally recognized as being part of Azerbaijan. Recent incidents have resulted in the death of eleven Azerbaijani police and civilians, including a mine blast and another separate incident. Air raid sirens have been heard in the main city of Karabakh. It is important to note that Azerbaijan and Armenia have engaged in two previous wars over Nagorno-Karabakh, first in the early 1990s after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, and then again in 2020. The only route from Armenia into the enclave, called the Lachin Corridor, has been effectively blocked by Azerbaijan since December.
