The GOP's border-related demands may hinder the provision of aid to Ukraine

Republican lawmakers in the US are likely to block legislation that aims to provide more aid to Ukraine. The $110bn package includes $61bn for Ukraine, as well as funds for Israel and aid for Gaza. However, it does not include the immigration and asylum reforms Republicans are seeking. The White House has warned that US aid for Ukraine could run out by January, and failure to provide additional support could result in a Russian victory. A classified briefing meant to gain support for new funds broke down as lawmakers shouted at each other over border security. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cancelled a virtual briefing with lawmakers. While the package already includes provisions for border security, Republican demands for additional changes to asylum rules have complicated negotiations with Democrats. Senate Republicans intend to reject a procedural vote by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to bring the package to the floor, unless immigration amendments are added. Even if it passes in the Senate, the package faces challenges in the House of Representatives. Democratic Kentucky Senator Chris Murphy expressed concern that the US is on the verge of abandoning Ukraine. Since Russia invaded Ukraine, Congress has approved over $110bn in aid, but without further action, the US will be unable to provide more weapons and equipment to Ukraine by the end of the year. Ukrainian officials stress the importance of US aid in resisting Russia and reclaiming occupied territory. Diminishing prospects for additional aid have caused unease among some Ukrainians.
