A landslide that occurred in a goldmining village in the Philippines has resulted in the death of at least 68 people. The incident took place a week ago in Davao de Oro province, and there are still 51 individuals missing. Rescue workers have little hope of finding any survivors at this point. A remarkable rescue took place when a three-year-old girl was found alive after being buried in the mud for over 60 hours. However, officials now believe that there is no chance of finding any more survivors due to the foul smell in the area. The landslide destroyed 55 homes and engulfed three buses and a minibus waiting to transport gold mine workers. The death toll consists of both residents and mining employees. Over 30 people have also been injured. Landslides are a recurring danger in the Philippines due to the mountainous terrain, heavy rainfall, and deforestation from mining and illegal logging activities. The region has also been affected by a series of earthquakes, which temporarily halted rescue operations due to a magnitude 5.9 earthquake on Saturday.
