Oscar Pistorius, a former Paralympian, is set to be released on parole from a South African prison after serving nearly 11 years for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius shot Steenkamp multiple times through a bathroom door in 2013, claiming that he mistook her for a burglar. After a long legal battle, he was ultimately convicted of murder in 2015. Pistorius, now 37 years old, will have to abide by strict conditions until his sentence ends in 2029. According to South African law, all offenders have the right to be considered for parole once they have completed half of their sentence. Pistorius has been incarcerated since October 2014. Despite his high public profile, the former athlete will be treated like any other parolee, confined to his home during specified hours with a ban on alcohol consumption and no contact with the media. Reeva Steenkamp, who was 29 at the time of her death, was a law graduate, successful model, and aspiring TV presenter. She had plans to establish a law firm to assist abused women. Pistorius fired four shots into a toilet cubicle at his Pretoria home, killing her almost instantly. Initially convicted of culpable homicide, or manslaughter, he was later found guilty of murder by the Supreme Court of Appeal. Steenkamp's mother expressed concerns about Pistorius's anger issues not being adequately addressed during his imprisonment but mentioned that she forgave him years ago.
