New York City has declared a state of emergency after being hit by severe storms that caused flash flooding. The heavy rain led to the flooding of subway systems, streets, and highways, with one terminal at LaGuardia Airport having to be closed on Friday. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York state disclosed that some areas received up to five inches of rain overnight, and a further seven inches were expected. She expressed concern over the dangerous and life-threatening nature of the storm and urged residents to prioritize their safety by avoiding flooded roads. Ms. Hochul made the announcement on X, previously known as Twitter, declaring a state of emergency across New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley due to the intense rainfall throughout the region.
