An imam from a mosque in Newark, New Jersey, was tragically shot and killed by an unidentified attacker who is still on the loose. Law enforcement officials stated during a press conference that they do not believe the motive behind Imam Hassan Sharif's murder was domestic terrorism or bias. Mr. Sharif was discovered outside his Masjid-Muhammad-Newark mosque with multiple gunshot wounds before dawn and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin informed reporters that the evidence they have gathered so far does not suggest any bias or terrorist motive. However, he acknowledged that due to the increase in bias against the Muslim community, they felt compelled to disclose their preliminary findings. Governor Phil Murphy issued a statement urging anyone with information to come forward and assured all residents, especially those near houses of worship, that their safety would be prioritized. A reward of $25,000 is being offered for any information related to the shooting. Residents in the area speculate that the attack could be a result of crime in the city. Imam Sharif had also worked as a transportation security officer at Newark Liberty International Airport. Various organizations, including the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, expressed their devastation at his killing and praised him as a respected leader. Senator Cory Booker shared his sorrow on social media and sent his condolences to the Muslim community of New Jersey. Local residents described Imam Sharif as a kind-hearted person with no known conflicts.
