Netflix has released viewer data for 99% of its catalogue for the first time, providing transparency about the popularity of its shows and movies. The streaming giant has faced criticism for not being open about how content performs on its platform. This lack of transparency led to backlash from actors and writers, who demanded higher royalties for shows that performed well on streaming platforms. In response, co-chief executive Ted Sarandos acknowledged the distrust from the creator community and stated that Netflix had kept its viewer data private in order to protect crucial information from competitors. However, the company now believes that sharing this information will provide deeper insights into audiences and what resonates with them. The release of this data is considered a significant step forward for both Netflix and the industry as a whole. The What We Watched report ranks 18,000 titles based on the amount of hours viewed between January and June of this year. It covers nearly 100 billion hours of viewing time and includes popular shows like The Night Agent, Ginny and Georgia, Gilmore Girls, Seinfeld, Friends, and The Office. The top movie on the list was The Mother starring Jennifer Lopez. The report also reveals that around a third of all viewing is from non-English stories, indicating continued demand for older titles. Netflix emphasizes that success on its platform is not solely determined by hours viewed, but also by the audience's response to a movie or TV show. With approximately 250 million subscribers globally, Netflix is the largest streaming service in the world. It has recently started releasing weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists, showcasing the most-watched content in various languages. The What We Watched report demonstrates that 55% of Netflix's viewing comes from its original films and series, while 45% is from licensed content.
