Mexican actress Melissa Barrera has been removed from the upcoming Scream film sequel due to what the production company deemed as antisemitic social media posts regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict. Barrera had been actively sharing her thoughts on the conflict, including one post that accused Israel of "genocide and ethnic cleansing." Spyglass, the production company, stated that it has a "zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form." Barrera has not yet responded to the situation, but she did reshare a quote on her Instagram story that some interpreted as a reference to her dismissal from the film. Barrera is known for her roles in previous Scream movies, as well as Carmen and In The Heights. Other posts shared by Barrera discussed distorting the Holocaust and comparing Gaza to a concentration camp. Spyglass made it clear that they condemn hate speech and false references to genocide and Holocaust distortion. Christopher Landon, expected to direct Scream 7, alluded to the situation on social media. The Scream franchise experienced a successful reboot, with the fifth and sixth films earning substantial box office revenue. Barrera's firing follows UTA, a Hollywood talent agency, dropping actress Susan Sarandon for her participation in a pro-Palestinian rally. Sarandon urged people to support Palestinians and highlighted the importance of questioning and educating oneself. The Israel-Gaza conflict began after Hamas attacked southern Israel, leading to a military response from Israel. The conflict has caused numerous casualties, with a temporary pause in fighting recently agreed upon by both sides.
