A rare painting by renowned 17th Century artist Artemisia Gentileschi has been discovered in storage at Hampton Court Palace. The artwork, titled Susanna And The Elders, had been mistakenly attributed to a French artist and kept hidden for more than a century. However, the Royal Collection Trust recently identified it as a significant piece by Gentileschi and has now put it on public display at Windsor Castle. According to Anna Reynolds, Deputy Surveyor of The King's Pictures, the painting depicts Susanna's discomfort as she is observed by two men while bathing. Gentileschi, who overcame great adversity including a traumatic rape trial as a teenager, was celebrated for her strong and dynamic female subjects. Investigations into the inventories of King Charles I's possessions led to the rediscovery of the painting, which bears the branding 'CR' indicating its former place in the king's collection.
