During recent construction work at St Anne Street police station in Liverpool, a time capsule buried by builders in 1971 was unearthed. The bricklayers, known by the names Swooper, Smiler, and Boss, placed a newspaper inside the container that covered the UK's entrance into the European Economic Community. Merseyside Police are interested in speaking to anyone involved in the burying of the time capsule, although no arrests will be made as the builders humorously referred to it as a "crime." The discovery occurred after the station underwent renovations in 2021. The time capsule contained a copy of the Daily Mirror from the time, featuring then Prime Minister Edward Heath's aspirations for "new opportunities." Merseyside's police commissioner, Emily Spurrell, described the capsule's unearthing as an "unexpected surprise" and commended the builders for their enduring tribute. The revamped St Anne Street station now has a new floor and will accommodate approximately 450 police officers and staff. A spokesperson from Merseyside Police emphasized that no crimes were committed during the construction of the station.
