The body of a newborn baby was discovered on a boat carrying migrants during a rescue operation near the Italian island of Lampedusa. It is believed that the mother gave birth during the journey from North Africa and an investigation is underway into the child's death. Over the past three days, more than 8,000 migrants have arrived in Lampedusa, causing Italy to request assistance from the European Union. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed concern about the overwhelming pressure the country is facing due to the influx of migrants and has called for a naval blockade by the EU to prevent boats from reaching Italian shores. The Italian Red Cross is currently dealing with approximately 2,500 individuals at a reception center designed for only 400 arrivals. The organization's volunteers and staff have been providing meals and aiding in the transfer of new arrivals to Sicily and other locations. Italy has seen a significant increase in migrant arrivals, with nearly 126,000 migrants arriving so far this year, double the number compared to the same period last year. Prime Minister Meloni has urged European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation and accelerate the implementation of an agreement with Tunisia. Tunisia has become the primary departure point for African migrants attempting to reach Europe. The EU deal, signed in July, includes €110 million of funding to combat smuggling, strengthen borders, and facilitate the return of migrants. The recent surge in arrivals prompted protests by Lampedusa's residents who oppose plans to construct a new tent camp for the migrants. The residents expressed concern for the future of Lampedusa and called on Europe and the Italian government to listen to their demands.
