Kim Davis, a former clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, has been ordered by a judge to pay legal fees to one couple's lawyers. Last year, she was found guilty by a jury of violating the constitutional rights of a Kentucky couple. The judge ruled that Davis must pay $260,000 in fees, in addition to the $100,000 in damages she already owed them. Davis, an evangelical Christian, had refused to comply with the couple's request for a license, citing her beliefs that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Her lawyers argued that the fees were excessive, but the judge disagreed and stated that Davis must pay since the couple had won the lawsuit. The judge, who had previously sentenced Davis to jail time in 2015 for contempt of court, also noted that the couple had sought to uphold their right to marry. Davis had appealed to the US Supreme Court in 2020, but her appeal was declined. Meanwhile, her opponent, Mr Ermhold, is now running for the county clerk position. Davis lost her re-election bid for Rowan County's clerkship in 2018.
