Kenya experienced a nationwide power blackout on Sunday, leaving the country in darkness and prompting demands for answers. This is the third countrywide blackout in the past four months. The power outage caused disruptions in various services, including at Nairobi's main airport, where two terminals were without electricity for hours. The government has faced criticism from Kenyans who are frustrated and angry about the recurring power disruptions. Power has been restored to most parts of the country, except for some areas in Nairobi and the Coast region. Kenya Power, the state-run power provider, assured the public that they are working to restore normalcy as soon as possible. The Minister of Power and Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, has faced the brunt of the criticism. Kenyans are calling for financial compensation for the loss of electricity, which has resulted in income loss, spoiling of food, and wasted time. Murkomen faced criticism for another blackout at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). He had promised in August that such an event would not occur again. The airport's backup generators failed to activate immediately, leading to disruptions in two of the busiest terminals. Murkomen suggested that the outage may have been a result of sabotage and called for an investigation into possible acts of sabotage and cover-up by the National Police Service. Kenya has experienced several national power outages in recent months.
