Kenyan athlete Kelvin Kiptum tragically lost his life in a road accident. Despite coming from humble beginnings and not being able to afford running shoes six years ago, Kiptum quickly rose to fame as one of the world's best marathon runners. His rapid ascent to the top of the sport left many in awe, especially considering that he had never run the full marathon distance before 2022. Kiptum broke the world record in Chicago, surpassing his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge's time by over half a minute. His potential and sudden fame shocked many in Kenya, who now mourn the loss of a young athlete with a promising future. Kiptum had expressed his goals of achieving a sub-two-hour time in the Rotterdam Marathon, aiming to make history. He grew up in a village in the Rift Valley region, an area known for producing exceptional long-distance runners. Kiptum's passion for running developed from watching his cousin and working hard to pursue his dreams as an athlete. After initially facing resistance from his father, he eventually gained support, including from his coach Gervais Hakizimana, who tragically also lost his life in the accident. Hakizimana played a crucial role in Kiptum's success, encouraging him to transition from half marathons to the full distance. Kiptum's first full marathon in Valencia in 2022 garnered attention as he achieved the fourth fastest time and the fastest debut marathon in history. His unique running style of holding back in the first half and then attacking the second half impressed spectators. He went on to set a course record at the London Marathon and ultimately broke the world record in Chicago. Kiptum had dreams of running under two hours and had a promising future ahead of him.
