Josef Fritzl, the notorious Austrian sex offender who imprisoned his daughter for 24 years and fathered seven children with her, may soon be transferred from a high-security prison, according to local media. Fritzl, now 88 years old, was sentenced to life in prison in 2009, following a shocking case that captivated the world. However, a recent psychiatric evaluation suggests that due to his dementia, he no longer poses a threat to society. As a result, a court will decide whether or not to relocate him to a regular prison facility. Currently, Fritzl is being held at Stein Prison, a high-security institution for mentally disturbed offenders in Krems an der Donau. Austria allows those serving life sentences to apply for conditional release after 15 years. Therefore, Fritzl is now eligible for parole. Scholars in criminal law believe that conditional release or a transfer to a care home are possible outcomes for Fritzl, who has changed his name. The experts interviewed by Austrian public broadcaster ORF consider it highly likely that his release will be approved. However, it is important to note that a regional court in 2022 deemed Fritzl to be no longer dangerous and ordered his move to a standard prison, yet the decision was later overturned by the Higher Regional Court in Vienna. The Fritzl case, which emerged in the town of Amstetten in 2008, shocked Austria and gained infamy as one of the country's most horrific criminal episodes. Fritzl was convicted of murder through neglect, as well as numerous charges including rape, incest, and the enslavement of his own daughter. Since their release, Fritzl's daughter and her children have assumed new identities to protect their privacy.
