Indonesia is preparing for its sixth election since transitioning from a military dictatorship in the 1990s. The race for the presidency is between current Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto and two former governors, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo. The outcome of the election will not only impact Indonesia but also have implications for the US-China rivalry in the Indo-Pacific region. Prabowo Subianto, who is seen as the frontrunner, has been trying to distance himself from his strongman image associated with General Suharto's dictatorship. However, there are concerns that his presidency could lead to a regression in Indonesia's democracy. Anies Baswedan, the former Jakarta governor, has positioned himself as an alternative to the other candidates and has gained support from conservative Islamic groups. Ganjar Pranowo, the governor of a large province, is seen as an underdog without the backing of President Joko Widodo. His campaign focuses on populist policies and connecting with the grassroots.
