California-based fast food chain In-N-Out Burger is closing its only store in Oakland, citing concerns about crime as the reason for its closure. This marks the first time in the company's 75-year history that it is shutting down a location. Despite taking measures to enhance safety, such as increased security, customers and employees have frequently experienced car break-ins, property damage, theft, and armed robberies, according to a statement from In-N-Out. Violent crime has risen significantly in Oakland, with an 18% increase in violent crimes, a 37% hike in robberies, and a 24% surge in burglaries between 2019 and 2022, as per data from the police department. In the vicinity of the Oakland International Airport In-N-Out location, there have been 1,335 reported incidents of crime since 2019. The closure will affect the employees and their families, and the company offered them the option to transfer to nearby restaurants or receive a severance package. In-N-Out emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of its customers and employees, rather than asking them to frequent or work in an unsafe environment. Other businesses in Oakland, including a Starbucks and local establishments, have also closed due to crime concerns. This closure adds to a trend of national corporations shutting down stores across the US due to rising crime rates, though data suggests a decrease in overall crime levels.
