Namibia's President, Hage Geingob, has passed away while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the capital city, Windhoek. The announcement was made by Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba, who stated that Mr Geingob died early on Sunday morning. He was accompanied by his wife, Madame Monica Geingos, and his children during his final moments. The 82-year-old leader had recently revealed to the public that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Consequently, he had planned to travel to the United States for treatment, with his return to Namibia scheduled for 2nd February. Mr Geingob became president in 2015 and was serving his second and final term in office. In the past, he had also undergone an aortic operation and had successfully battled prostate cancer in 2014. In other news, Namibia is preparing for presidential and parliamentary elections in November. The governing Swapo party, which has been in power since the country's independence in 1990, has selected Mrs Nandi-Ndaitwah as its presidential candidate. Currently serving as Namibia's deputy prime minister, she would become the country's first female president if elected.
