Pop star Dua Lipa kicked off the 2024 Grammy Awards with an energetic performance of her songs "Training Season," "Houdini," and "Dance the Night." Tracy Chapman then made a rare appearance on stage in Los Angeles to join Luke Combs for a cover of her hit song "Fast Car." R&B star SZA, the show's leading nominee, recreated the Crazy 88 fight scene from Quentin Tarantino's movie Kill Bill to accompany her song of the same name. SZA had already won two awards in the pre-ceremony and was still in the running for three of the night's most prestigious prizes: album of the year, record of the year, and song of the year. Miley Cyrus won her first Grammy for best pop vocal performance with her song "Flowers." In her acceptance speech, Cyrus shared a story about a boy catching a butterfly, comparing it to her winning moment. The Grammys, known as "music's biggest night," featured a star-studded lineup that included icons like Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, and U2, as well as chart-topping artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Burna Boy, and Travis Scott. Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and Doja Cat were among the attendees. Even Meryl Streep showed her support for son-in-law Mark Ronson, who was nominated for producing the Barbie soundtrack. While only a few awards were presented during the live show, the majority were announced during a four-hour premiere ceremony in the afternoon. Rapper Killer Mike and indie-rock trio Boygenius had multiple wins at the premiere ceremony. Kylie Minogue won her second Grammy for best pop dance recording, and Joni Mitchell received the best folk album award for her live album following her return to the stage after a brain aneurysm. South African singer Tyla made history by winning the inaugural award for best African performance with her viral hit "Water," which inspired a TikTok dance craze. Reflecting on her success, Tyla expressed her disbelief and joy at hearing her song play everywhere she goes.
