According to Google's yearly review, 2023 was a year filled with big films and the loss of notable celebrities. The most searched films were Barbie and Oppenheimer, except when people were searching for news about those who passed away. In the music category, footballers Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane were heavily searched, while Shakira topped the list as the most Googled musician. These results were determined based on the search terms that experienced the highest increase in popularity compared to previous years. The films Barbie, which explores the doll's feminist awakening, and Oppenheimer, about the development of the atomic bomb, broke records in the cinema industry. They earned £30 million in their opening weekend, marking the best performance since 2019. Another notable film search in the UK was for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, released in May. Additionally, the Netflix special Bank of Dave, based on the story of Burnley businessman Dave Fishwick, ranked as the 9th most-searched movie. Unsurprisingly, many searches in 2023 were related to celebrities who passed away. Friends star Matthew Perry, who died at the age of 54 in October, garnered the most global searches in this category. Perry was also remembered by gamers for his appearance as Benny in Fallout: New Vegas. Other notable figures searched in the UK included Tina Turner, Sinead O'Connor, Paul O'Grady, and S Club 7 star Paul Cattermole, who passed away shortly after the band announced a comeback tour. In the music world, Smash Mouth became the fourth-most-searched music act after frontman Steve Harwell died in September at the age of 56. The band gained popularity with their hit song "All Star," which featured in films like Mystery Men, Inspector Gadget, and Shrek. In the sports arena, French footballer Kylian Mbappe, known as one of the best players in the world, and Englishman Harry Kane, who made a high-profile move to Bayern Munich, were among the most-searched athletes in 2023. However, the most-searched athlete may be unfamiliar to many in the UK - American football star Damar Hamlin. Hamlin collapsed during a National Football League game in January but was resuscitated on the field. After a lengthy rehabilitation process, he made his first appearance for the Buffalo Bills in October, drawing international interest.
