The death of actress Emmanuelle Debever is currently being investigated by Paris prosecutors as a possible suicide. Debever, who was 60 years old, was found in the River Seine in Paris and passed away in the hospital on 7 December. The cause of her death is being looked into due to reports in the media about her complaints against Gérard Depardieu, a fellow actor, in 2019. It is important to note that there is no indication of any criminal activity involved. Debever's disappearance from her home and the discovery of a note approximately a week before her death adds to the mystery surrounding the situation. The day she died, a documentary was aired on France 2 television that included allegations of sexual misconduct against Depardieu. One actress, Charlotte Arnould, claimed to have filed a lawsuit in 2018 accusing Depardieu of rape. The program also showed Depardieu using crude language in the presence of women during a filming project in North Korea in 2018. These revelations led several prominent figures in the French cinema industry to distance themselves from Depardieu. Depardieu has consistently denied the accusations of abusing women, and his former agent has accused the media of conducting a trial by public opinion. In response to the documentary, France Télévisions suspended the broadcast of Depardieu's films. Justine Becattini, the host of the popular show France Has Got Talent, expressed her disgust towards Depardieu after seeing images of him observing a young girl riding a horse in North Korea. François Legault, the prime minister of Quebec, announced that Depardieu would be excluded from the National Order of Quebec due to his "scandalous remarks." Debever's allegations against Depardieu were not included in the documentary. In 2019, she took to Facebook to claim that Depardieu had touched her inappropriately while they were working together on the film Danton in 1982. She described the incident, stating that Depardieu had taken advantage of the privacy of a carriage and touched her under her skirts. After working on a few films and TV shows in the 1980s, Debever disappeared from public life. The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the cause of Debever's death in light of the new information regarding her complaints against Depardieu. The actor, known for his roles in over 200 films throughout his career, including Green Card and Cyrano de Bergerac, is currently facing two separate investigations for rape and sexual assault. In October, Depardieu wrote an open letter denying all allegations against him, emphasizing that he has never abused a woman and that he is being unfairly targeted by the media and public opinion. He has not specifically addressed the allegations made in the documentary.
