French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin is planning to introduce a ban on small ultra-right groups following a series of violent protests sparked by the murder of a schoolboy during a village dance. The 16-year-old, known as Thomas, was fatally stabbed during a fight at the dance in Crépol on November 18. Nine suspects have been placed under investigation, but far-right activists have used the incident to advance their agenda. Government spokesman Olivier Véran, speaking during a visit to Crépol, appealed for people not to respond to violence with violence and warned of the potential for societal unrest. Prosecutors caution that the circumstances surrounding the boy's murder remain unclear and have urged against jumping to conclusions. Reports suggest that an argument inside the village hall escalated into a brawl outside as more young people arrived at the scene. Thomas, a dedicated rugby player, was mourned by 2,000 people and a minute of silence was observed at French rugby games over the weekend. Far-right politicians have alleged a racial motive for the crime, although this has not been confirmed. However, extremist groups took to the streets in Romans-sur-Isère, near Crépol, where they claimed some of the suspects lived. Authorities have stated that the protesters came with the intention of committing violence against local residents and police officers. Six young men have already been sentenced in connection with the riots, receiving prison terms of between six and 10 months. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced plans to ban three small ultra-right groups linked to the violence. He also noted that extremist militias "seek to attack Arabs, people with different skin colors, and express nostalgia for the Third Reich," and stated that authorities had thwarted 13 far-right terror plots since 2017. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne criticized politicians for exploiting the murder to fuel fears, highlighting their lack of respect for the victim.
