The president of the ongoing UN climate talks, Sultan al-Jaber, has responded to accusations that he denies a fundamental part of climate science. In November, he made comments suggesting there was no scientific basis for the global goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5C. However, al-Jaber clarified his stance on Monday, stating that he respects and believes in the science behind climate change. The talks in Dubai are focusing on advancing efforts to address climate change. Al-Jaber made the initial remarks during an online event with Mary Robinson, and he expressed surprise at attempts to undermine the work of the COP28 presidency. His statement was supported by Jim Skea, the chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, who emphasized al-Jaber's attention to the scientific evidence.
