In Chile's Valparaíso region, wildfires continue to devastate the area, leaving hundreds of people missing. The fires have taken the lives of more than 120 individuals and destroyed thousands of homes. President Gabriel Boric has described the situation as the country's most significant disaster since the 2010 earthquake that claimed over 500 lives. Satellite images have shown that the smoke produced by the fires is visible from space. The fires broke out during an abnormal heatwave, attracting tourists to the normally cool towns of Viña del Mar and Valparaíso. However, both cities, along with Quilpué, have been enveloped in smoke as the fires burn in the surrounding hills. Strong winds have intensified the fires, and witnesses report how their communities were instantaneously consumed by flames. The extent of the damage is captured in drone footage. Unfortunately, many people were unable to escape the rapidly spreading fires, resulting in a high death toll. Although only 33 individuals have been identified so far, officials have reported 123 deaths. Saving lives and extinguishing the fires are the government's top priorities, with volunteers providing aid to those who have lost their homes. According to authorities, nearly 15,000 homes have been damaged, and entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble, as evidenced by images of burned-out cars scattered along the streets. President Boric has declared a state of emergency and a nighttime curfew. Authorities are also investigating whether the fires were intentionally started.
