The members of BTS, the biggest pop band in the world, are currently enlisting in the military, which is a requirement for all able-bodied South Korean men aged 18-28. Lead vocalist Jung Kook recently joined his bandmates, just four weeks after achieving success with his solo career in New York. Despite his rising stardom, he decided to put everything on hold and return to Seoul. This move comes after a debate over whether BTS, as South Korea's most famous cultural export, should be exempt from military service. In 2020, a bill was passed allowing them to delay their service until the age of 30, but the band's agency confirmed that all seven members would fulfill the obligation starting with the eldest member, Jin. This hiatus will allow them to fulfill their military duty and pursue their own projects. While Western audiences may find it cruel that successful artists have to take a forced break, it is a reality for many in South Korea. BTS follows in the footsteps of other K-pop idols and K-drama stars who have had to take time off for military service. Despite the advanced warning, their fans globally have been emotional about this moment. Their fandom, known as ARMY, is considered the most engaged social media fanbase of any artist. The dedication of their fans is expected to sustain the band's status and their management's strategy of providing a constant stream of content will help maintain support during their absence. As BTS takes a break, it also creates opportunities for other K-pop groups to receive more attention and potentially make their mark on the Western mainstream charts.
