US senator Robert Menendez, who is already facing corruption charges, has been newly accused of acting as a foreign agent of Egypt. The indictment claims that Menendez and his wife, Nadine, provided sensitive US government information that benefited Egypt's government. This accusation comes after the couple previously faced bribery charges, to which they pleaded not guilty. Despite calls for his resignation, Menendez has refused to step down. The previous charges against him and his wife involved accepting bribes in the form of cash, gold, payments towards a mortgage, and a luxury vehicle from businessmen in New Jersey. Prosecutors allege that Menendez used his influence to increase US aid and military sales to Egypt. During a search of his New Jersey home, investigators found a large sum of cash and gold bars hidden throughout the residence. The recent indictment, filed by New York federal prosecutors, claims that Menendez breached his official duty by benefiting the Egyptian government. It states that he encouraged senators to lift a hold on aid to Egypt and shared sensitive US government information. The conspiracy is said to have taken place between January 2018 and June 2022. The indictment also includes new photos of Menendez and his wife dining with Egyptian officials. Menendez faces charges under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which prohibits public officials from acting as or agreeing to be agents of foreign principals. In a previous indictment, Menendez and his wife faced counts of conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion. Menendez has maintained his innocence and denied any wrongdoing. Over 30 Senate Democrats, including fellow New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, have called for his resignation. Menendez's lawyers have yet to comment on the recent allegations.
