US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Israel to show support after the recent deadly attacks by Hamas. During his visit, Blinken will seek the release of hostages kidnapped by Hamas, some of whom are American citizens. He will also urge restraint and advocate for safe passage for civilians in Gaza in anticipation of a possible Israeli ground offensive. The attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 1,100 Palestinians and 22 Israelis, as well as numerous injuries. Hamas, recognized as a terrorist organization by the US, has taken around 150 people hostage after breaching the border fence in multiple locations in the Gaza Strip. Blinken is scheduled to meet with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the situation. Additionally, he will meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan's King Abdullah in Amman on Friday. US President Joe Biden emphasized the need for Israel to adhere to the laws of war in its response to Hamas but also acknowledged Israel's right to defend itself. Israel has imposed a blockade on Gaza and pledged to eliminate Hamas, resulting in a fierce bombing campaign. The US state department estimates that there may be up to 600,000 Palestinian Americans residing in Gaza, with some expressing a desire to leave. Humanitarian organizations have called for the establishment of safe corridors to alleviate the suffering of Gaza's civilians.
