Alberto Fujimori, Peru's former president, has been released from prison in Lima after spending over 15 years behind bars. As he left Barbadillo prison, he was greeted by hundreds of supporters and accompanied by his two children, Kenji and Keiko Fujimori. The nation's constitutional court upheld a presidential pardon granted six years ago to the 85-year-old, which has caused great controversy due to his history of corruption and human rights violations during his time in power. Supporters view Fujimori as a leader who saved Peru from terrorism and economic collapse, while opponents see him as an authoritarian figure who disregarded democratic institutions to maintain control. Fujimori's presidency from 1990 to 2000 was known for its authoritarian rule and the crackdown on violent insurgencies, resulting in a high death toll. In 2009, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for bribery, abuse of power, and human rights abuses. However, in December 2017, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski granted him a pardon due to his deteriorating health.
