An independent inquiry has revealed that UK special forces killed nine people in Afghanistan during a night raid, despite the victims being unarmed civilians. The inquiry was launched after a BBC Panorama investigation uncovered suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths of 54 people during a six-month tour. It is believed that senior officers suspected troops of carrying out extrajudicial killings, including targeting "fighting age" men who posed no threat. The SAS is accused of using night raids as a cover to commit unlawful killings, which were subsequently covered up. The inquiry will examine allegations of cover-ups and inadequate investigations by the Royal Military Police.
