Zanzibar, a popular tourist destination in Africa, is facing an alcohol shortage that is threatening its tourism sector. Tourism makes up around 90% of the foreign revenue for the Tanzanian archipelago. Due to a disruption in the supply chain caused by a change in importers, the price of beer has increased by nearly 100%. The shortage has led to the resignation of the islands' tourism minister, who may have been connected to the alcohol supply issues. Zanzibar is renowned for its beautiful beaches and cultural heritage, and it was ranked as one of the top travel destinations in Africa last year. However, hoteliers are concerned that the alcohol shortage will negatively impact tourism. Many establishments are only serving soft drinks, forcing tourists to go to the main city for alcohol. Local businesses, such as bars and restaurants, are also suffering from the shortage. The manufacture of alcohol is banned in Zanzibar, so most of it is imported from mainland Tanzania or South Africa. The shortage began when the permits for the three established importers were not renewed, and new importers are facing difficulties meeting the demand. The situation has been further complicated by appeals from the previous license holders. Liquor stores in Zanzibar are struggling to keep their shelves stocked, and there are concerns that the shortage could lead to job losses. The Zanzibar Tourism Investment Association has raised concerns about the impact of the shortage on the tourism sector. The outgoing tourism minister accused the Zanzibar Liquor Control Board of mismanaging the industry and resigned due to unfavorable working conditions. The crisis comes at a time when tourist arrivals in Zanzibar are increasing, with a 16% surge in international visitors last year. However, the increase in arrivals is largely due to tourists from India and Russia.
