The US military has successfully intercepted a missile that was launched towards one of its warships in the Red Sea by Houthi militants in Yemen. The missile, which was fired at the USS Laboon, was shot down near Hudaydah by a US fighter aircraft. Fortunately, no injuries or damage were reported in the incident. This comes after the US and UK conducted strikes in Yemen with the aim of degrading the military capabilities of the Houthis, who have been attacking cargo ships in the Red Sea. The recent strikes targeted around 30 locations, including arms depots, logistical hubs, and air defense systems. President Joe Biden has pledged to take further measures to protect American citizens and international commerce if necessary, while the UK has also expressed its readiness for additional actions against the Houthis. A prominent Houthi supporter has warned that the group will target US and UK battleships if the strikes on Yemen continue. The Houthis control a significant portion of Yemen, including the capital, and are known for receiving weapons from Iran. They have carried out numerous attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea since November, causing major disruptions to global maritime trade. As a result, shipping companies have rerouted their vessels, leading to economic impacts felt by companies such as Tesla, Volvo Cars, Tesco, and Ikea. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has emphasized that these attacks, along with the strikes in Yemen, are exacerbating concerns that the conflict in Gaza could spread throughout the wider Middle East.
