The World Witnesses the Activation of the Tallest Wooden Wind Turbine in Operation

A Swedish start-up called Modvion has built the world's tallest wooden turbine tower, using wood for wind power. The 150m (492ft) tall turbine tower is made from laminated veneer lumber (LVL), which is the same wood used for Christmas trees. The tower's strength comes from the 144 layers of LVL that make up its thick walls. The wood and glue combination is lighter than steel, allowing for the construction of taller turbines with less material. The use of wood instead of steel eliminates the carbon footprint of the wind turbines, making them carbon negative. Modvion hopes to build even taller wooden turbines in the future and plans to produce 100 wooden modular turbines a year by 2027. The renewable energy industry sees tremendous potential in wooden turbines as an alternative technology to steel towers. However, some experts point out that the modular transport benefits of wooden turbines may not apply to offshore projects.
